It has now emerged officers were arresting a shoplifting suspect who fled from Atherstone town centre area along the canal network. Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Gavin Scott was carrying out high visibility patrols in the town centre when he was made aware by staff that the suspect had left a store and hidden a large shopping bag in a hedge nearby.
The hidden bag was found and it contained more than £200 worth of meat and fish products. During this time the suspect was seen nearby and ran off towards the railway station followed by PCSO Scott. The suspect continued to run changing his course onto the canal network with some 'barge hopping' involved, police have said.
