'Hundreds' of fish have died after entering a small stream when an unknown person opened sluice gates at a reservoir near Sheffield.

Police say someone opened the sluice gates at Hathill Reservoir, causing hundreds of fish to enter a small strea, where they died. South Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation and are appealing to members of the public for help.

A spokesperson for the force said: "The Wildlife and Rural Crime Team has opened an investigation into why the sluice gates have been opened at Harthill Reservoir, allowing what appear to be hundreds of fish to enter into a small stream where many have died. This constitutes an offence of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006."
